Dick’s Sporting Goods is looking to make a change in gun culture.
Dick’s is one of America’s biggest gun retailers, and just this morning they announced that they will no longer sell assault-style rifles in any of their stores nationwide. They also made the change to no longer sell guns to anyone under the age of 21.
According to Complex, CEO Ed Stack, made the announcement this morning on Good Morning America. He mentioned that the most recent high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, played a large role in the decision, due to the fact that the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, bought a gun from Dick’s in 2017, (although it was not the same gun used in the shooting).
When asked what led to the decision Stack answered, “based on what’s happened and looking at those kids and those parents, it moved up all unimaginable. To think about the loss and the grief that those kids and those parents had, we said, ‘we need to do something.’ And we’re taking these guns out of all of our stores permanently.”

Although Dick’s followed the system in place when selling an assault-rifle, Stack said that it was too easy for Cruz to obtain that weapon legally at Dick’s.
“We did everything by the book. We did everything that the law required...The systems that are in place across the board just aren’t effective enough to keep us from selling someone a gun like that.”
